“Burial depth” refers to the vertical distance from the bottom of the pipe to the ground surface, which reflects the overall depth of the pipe below the ground. It is mainly used in design and construction to ensure that the pipeline is laid at an appropriate depth to avoid being affected by external environmental factors (such as frozen soil and groundwater).

“Soil covering depth” refers to the thickness of the soil layer from the top of the pipe to the ground surface. It only considers the thickness of the soil layer covering the top of the pipe, but not the height of the pipe itself. The soil covering depth determines the ability of the pipeline to withstand surface loads (such as traffic and construction).

● Soil type

The influence of soil type on burial depth and cover depth is mainly reflected in its bearing capacity and stability. Dense and stable soil can provide better support for pipelines and usually allows shallower burial depth and cover depth, while loose and weak soil requires increased burial depth and cover thickness to enhance the stability of the pipeline and prevent settlement or displacement.

● Groundwater level

When the groundwater level is high, it will cause the soil to loosen or soften, reduce the bearing capacity of the soil, and increase the difficulty of construction. It is usually necessary to increase the pipeline burial depth and cover depth to maintain the stability of the pipeline.

● Climate conditions

In cold areas, the soil is easily affected by freezing and thawing. Although both burial depth and covering depth describe the distance between the pipeline and the ground, they have different focuses. Burial depth considers the overall safety and stability of the pipeline more, especially when dealing with ground loads, groundwater levels and soil conditions; while covering depth focuses more on protecting the pipeline to prevent external factors such as traffic loads or frozen soil from causing direct damage to the pipeline.

In actual projects, burial depth and covering depth often need to be considered comprehensively to ensure the long-term safe operation of the pipeline. For example, in cold areas, antifreeze requirements may increase the requirements for burial depth and covering depth at the same time; in areas with heavy traffic, the covering depth may need to be increased to resist the impact of ground loads.
